 The Nile River

Two different lands

       The black land is the fertile land on the banks of the Nile River. The Ancient Egyptains used this land for growing crops.  This was one of the only lands the Ancient Egyptians farmed on because of its layer of rich, black silt, which was deposited there every year after the Nile flood.

     The 'Red Land' is a desert that protected Egypt on two sides. These deserts separated Ancient Egypt from close by countries and invading armies. They provided the Ancient Egyptians with a source of metal and stones.

The Two Rivers of the Nile

     The two rivers of the nile are the Blue Nile and the White Nile.   which is the reason of it not drying during the dry seasons. At one time there were about six tributaries feeding the Nile, however these eventually dried out due to slow water.

The Nile Flood

     The Nile has a flood every year because the snow in the mountains melts and brings nutrients in the form of silt. This silt was left once the river floods receded, leaving moist fertile soil for plants to grow. The ancient Egyptians used floods for horticultural domestic use.

  THE FLOOD

Crops

     The Egyptians grew many crops including:   Wheat, barley, legumes, lettuce, onions, emmer, leeks, dill, grapes, melons, and gourds. They also grew trees like christ's thom, date palm and eucalyptus. Some of the other plants which they used were flowers, such as lily and lotus, tamarisk, papyrus, acacia, poinciana, and jacaranda. They used oils from the castor plant and saffron. Contrary to popular belief, olives were not grown in Egypt.

4) nutrient- anything nutritious

5) invade- to enter forcibly

6) source- a place or thing from which something originates

7) silt- a fine grained, sandy sediment carried or deposited by water

8) deserts- an unhabitable region

9) horticulture -  the art and science of plant cultivation
